Went to see the movie Peepli Live recently. After spending a fortune on tickets at a theatre lounge, I was sitting snug on the recliner and enjoying the comforts of a modern day auditorium. I had a busy week at office and the break was really welcome. But then the movie started. I was just into the second scene when I started shifting uncomfortably in my seat. Was it guilt? Perhaps. Faced with the miseries of our farmers in the other India, my weekend break started seeming like a guilty indulgence; a luxury that made me feel ashamed; ashamed of my country, more than myself. I would have felt better and proud of my country, if we had fewer lounges and multiplexes and better conditions for our farmers. The skewed pattern of our growth is hardly commendable. It is giving rise to more friction, frustrations and confrontations in the country. ‘No body bothers’ is the best way we can describe the attitude of the government and media.
As the drama surrounding the suicide of Natha unfolded, it also brought to life, very realistically, the sheer callousness in which our politicians and media personnel function. It didn’t seem like the story of Peepli, it was the story of India. It was ‘India live’. If Peepli live was built around the bankruptcy of Natha and his brother, currently, India live is weaved around our moral bankruptcy surrounding the Common Wealth Games. It has all the masalas the movie showed : Politics, TRPs, treachery…
The movie truly made me think. It also made me frustrated. Because, I know it will move the audience, but I have my doubts if it will make the system act differently.
I congratulate Mr. Aamir Khan for producing this fabulous movie and his courage and conviction in movies with a message.
Good review of the movie or India and its system, rather. Yes some movies tell you the dark reality you face in life and gives no solution for that. The guilt feeling stays for few days and then we move on, saying ourselves that we can do very little to change this corrupt system or to change the lives of those poor, neglected souls like Nathu. I am yet to see the movie, but yes i too have big urge to see the movie... Good one Rajesh!
